AGC of Illinois participated in a roundtable with members of Congress focused on various workforce issues, including apprenticeships and career and technical education, the impact of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on companies’ abilities to invest in their workforce, and more.

Earlier this year, the House Committee on Ways and Means created 10 “tax teams” to focus on different aspects of the tax code and how it affects businesses, individuals, and families. One of the teams, called “American Workforce” is focused on workforce development and how the tax code can encourage it. The team is chaired by Representative Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), and on Monday, he, along with another member of the team—Rep. Mike Carey (R-Ohio)—hosted a roundtable discussion in Rockford, Illinois. You might recall, AGC has previously reported on our participation in these roundtables.

Matt Reyhan of Sangamo Construction, and President of the AGC of Illinois chapter, participated in the roundtable discussion on Monday. The discussion focused on promoting additional pathways to the workforce through apprenticeships and career and technical education, the impact of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and how it impacted companies’ abilities to invest in their workforce, and other topics. Considering many tax provisions important to the construction industry will expire in 2025, the teams will make recommendations to the full committee at the end of the year after hosting well over 100 of these types of roundtables with different stakeholder groups, both in Washington, DC, and across the country.
