Unearthing the Secrets to Hiring, Labor and Retention in the Construction Industry

The ever-evolving landscape of hiring, labor and retention in the United States for construction businesses continues to be a challenging terrain to navigate.

The breaking news for employers: The power dynamic has shifted, and it’s time to face the music — job seekers are calling the shots. Gone are the days when employers could just post a job listing and expect a flood of applications. Candidates have become savvy adventurers, seeking a thorough and captivating journey that comes with career perks.

The construction industry in the U.S. has not only experienced strong demand for skilled workers but also witnessed wage growth in recent years. With low unemployment rates and a robust economy, wages have steadily increased by an average of around 3% per year over the past decade, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This positive trend serves as a testament to the value and importance placed on skilled professionals in the industry.

But it’s not just about the numbers on the paycheck. Employers are recognizing the need to focus on providing comprehensive benefits to attract and retain top talent. Beyond competitive salaries and bonuses, a range of additional benefits is becoming increasingly crucial in the quest for a strong and loyal workforce.

Flexible Work Arrangements

Recognizing that employees have diverse needs and commitments outside of work, flexible work arrangements are gaining popularity. Many individuals place this as their top factor in the decision-making process. This may include options for remote work, flexible hours or compressed workweeks. Embracing flexibility shows that a company values work-life integration and trusts its employees to deliver outstanding results.

Health Insurance

Post pandemic left many people focusing a great deal more on their health. Offering robust health insurance plans helps employees feel secure and supported, knowing that their well-being is a priority. Companies offering fully covered health plans are being seen as taking an active role in ensuring the best for their staff. Comprehensive coverage for medical, dental and vision needs can go a long way in attracting and retaining skilled workers.

Retirement Plans

Construction professionals work hard to build a better future for others, but they also deserve a secure retirement for themselves. Providing retirement plans such as 401(k)s or pensions is now being closely studied by younger generations. They want more in employer matching and feel these options demonstrate a commitment to long-term employee well-being and financial stability.

Paid Time Off

Work-life balance is essential for employee satisfaction. Companies offering generous paid time off, including vacation days, holidays and personal leave, vacation roll-over and incentives to increase vacation allowance, are attractive to job candidates. Such generosity allows workers to recharge, spend quality time with loved ones and return to their tasks with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

By prioritizing wage growth and an attractive benefits package, construction businesses can position themselves as desirable employers in the industry. It’s not just about the paycheck but also about creating an environment where employees feel valued, supported and empowered.

Job seekers want more than just a job description. They want to be dazzled by a company’s story. Employers should share their journey, their mission, and their values, and paint a picture that showcases the company’s unique culture and exciting opportunities that await potential job candidates.
