The AGC Education and Research Foundation proudly unveiled the inaugural recipient of the Bowen Prize for Great Builders, an award honoring the most influential and impactful leaders in the construction industry. This new distinction recognizes those who manage the work on the ground, solve complex challenges, and deliver transformative infrastructure projects.

We are thrilled to announce the first-ever recipient of the Bowen Prize is Michael Svoboda, Project Manager at Kiewit Infrastructure South Co.

Michael led the Broadway Bridge Replacement Project in Nashville, TN—an ambitious $71.8 million urban infrastructure initiative. Under his leadership, the project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule, with an impeccable safety record of zero incidents over 110,000 work hours. His application of innovative construction methods, including Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, a Blended Construction Approach, and the use of advanced 3D modeling, helped minimize disruptions across a complex and high-traffic environment that included downtown streets and five active CSX rail lines.

In addition to his technical excellence, Michael’s leadership extended to stakeholder coordination and community engagement. His ability to build trust with TDOT, CSX, city officials, and local businesses helped ensure the success of the project and earned regional acclaim, including the Best Use of Technology & Innovation Award at America’s Transportation Awards.

Beyond the jobsite, Michael is a passionate advocate for workforce development. He serves on the University of Wyoming’s Industry Advisory Board, mentors young professionals, and plays a key role in training initiatives at Kiewit University, where he’s helping shape the next generation of construction leaders.

In recognition of his exemplary leadership, commitment to innovation and safety, and dedication to mentoring others, Michael Svoboda truly embodies the spirit of the Bowen Prize.

To further honor his impact, the AGC Education and Research Foundation is making a $50,000 contribution on Michael’s behalf to the University of Wyoming’s Construction Management Program. Francois Jacobs accepted the check on the University’s behalf during the award presentation.

Congratulations to Michael Svoboda, a builder, a mentor, and now, the inaugural recipient of the Bowen Prize for Great Builders.
