BY MIKE BURKE
Chief Operating Officer, Alberici Constructors, Inc.
Chairman of Construction Safety Week 2023

Having devoted my career to the construction industry in a variety of roles, I can say with confidence that building strong teams that work safely is our most important job.

At Alberici and throughout the industry, safety is a core value that drives us to ensure that every person, in every role, gets home safely every day. I am proud of the strides we have made to create a stronger and safer environment to accomplish that goal – but there’s still more work to be done. This is why I’m asking for your support throughout Construction Safety Week 2023, happening May 1-5.

Since 2014, Safety Week has provided opportunities for everyone in the construction industry to take ownership of their practices and recommit to a safer workplace. Competitors unite to support their teams by offering resources and activities designed to put safety at the forefront of every project. Safety Week is so much more than a campaign: It’s an opportunity for people, companies and the entire construction industry to join together, share best practices and build a stronger safety culture.

I am honored to be the chairman of Safety Week 2023 and am excited to share this year’s theme, one of the most powerful yet: Strong Voices, Safe Choices. The pillars of this year’s theme are empowerment, recognition, partnership, and impact. These concepts are seamlessly interwoven, contributing to building a culture of trust and creating a safe environment across the industry.

From craft professionals to project and business leaders, every voice is important to eliminate incidents on jobsites. We’ve created a variety of onsite materials and engagement activities centered around empowering everyone to speak up when they see potential hazards.

The Construction Safety Week website offers free resources, such as promotional materials, discussion topics, event ideas, videos, at-home activities for families and materials translated into Spanish and French. All these tools can be found at www.constructionsafetyweek.com.

I am personally inviting and encouraging all members of the construction industry to participate in the campaign from May 1-5, 2023, and to implement the resources, tools and tactics we provide throughout the year.

True to this year’s theme, every voice is important. Together, we will create strong voices and safer worksites for every employee, contractor and partner.
