On December 19, 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), released data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) for 2023. The data shows an overall decrease in worker fatalities from 2022. In 2023, 5,283 fatalities were reported, which is a 3.7% decrease. However, the construction industry saw an increase in the number of workplace fatalities from 1,069 in 2022 to 1,075 in 2023. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issued its 2023 Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII), which presents estimates of counts and incidence rates of employer-reported nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses by industry and type of case. The rate of recordable workplace injuries and illnesses in 2023 fell to its lowest level since 2003, and private industry non-fatal injuries and illnesses decreased 8.4 percent from 2022. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has extended the comment period until January 14, 2025 for their Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings. In addition, OSHA is scheduling an informal public hearing on this proposed rule. The public hearing will begin June 16, 2025. Proper-fitting safety equipment is essential for all workers. However, women in construction require gear that accounts for differences in body shape, size, and fit to be fully protected.
