Associated General Contractors of America Also Names Chapters at Iowa State University and Kansas State University Winners of its Annual Contest to Recognize the Most Successful AGC Student Chapters
Oklahoma State University, Iowa State University and Kansas State University were named the nation’s most outstanding student construction chapters of 2023, the Associated General Contractors of America announced. The student chapters were each honored for one of three categories: Resilient/Emerging Student Chapter, Community Service or Construction Management Skills.
“These student chapters represent the incredible promise and potential that is the future of our industry,” said Thomas Brown, association’s president and president of Sierra Pacific West, Inc. “What these students are doing today is a reflection of what our industry will be able to accomplish in the years to come.”
Oklahoma State utilized strategic initiatives to revitalize their chapter’s experience and increase attendance. In addition, the chapter’s dedication to community service and collaboration with organizations like the Construction Leadership Council of AGC of Oklahoma has further enriched their members’ experiences and expanded their professional networks. Under the leadership of Dr. Amy King, their chapter has flourished into a vibrant hub of growth and collaboration, reflecting unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation.
The Iowa State University AGC Student Chapter dedicated a collective 1504 volunteer hours within a school year. From assisting Habitat for Humanity in building homes in Omaha, Nebraska to renovating homes in Athens, Georgia, the chapter has left a lasting positive impact on communities near and far. Through meticulous planning, collaboration with industry partners, and dedication to safety and quality, the chapter has demonstrated exceptional leadership and teamwork skills.
The Kansas State University AGC Student Chapter partnered with local contractors to construct a 1,600 linear foot concrete sidewalk for Northview Elementary School. The project involving over 100 cubic yards of concrete poured across five Saturdays with the participation of 56 students. Their project scheduling, collaboration with industry partners, and effective communication underscore their mastery of construction management principles.
The three winning chapters received $2,000 each, as well as an additional $1,000 travel stipend to attend AGC’s Annual Convention, which was held last month in San Diego, Calif. The chapters were selected by a panel of judges made up of practicing commercial contractors. Student chapters were evaluated on qualifying criteria in each of the three categories for exemplary demonstration of the AGC of America tenants of Skill, Responsibility & Integrity.
