Across the United States, voters are set to decide on numerous transportation-focused ballot measures in the upcoming election. From sales tax renewals to bond measures for road and public transit improvements, these initiatives reflect a growing focus on infrastructure. Here’s an overview of some of the major transportation measures appearing on ballots this November.

In California, Proposition 5 seeks to lower the supermajority vote requirement for passing local bond measures to 55%, a change that could streamline the funding process for public projects, including transportation infrastructure. This adjustment, could allow cities and counties to more easily secure funding for essential road repairs, transit projects, and public amenities. Meanwhile, in Arizona, Maricopa County’s Proposition 479 is a renewal of the existing transportation excise tax, intended to support highways, public transit, and major arterial road projects. This measure extends a decades-long tax arrangement that has fueled the county’s growth, highlighting a trend of tax renewals being used to fund sustained infrastructure investment.

Other local governments are also turning to bond measures and sales tax extensions to address pressing infrastructure needs. Colorado Springs is asking voters to extend a sales tax specifically for road repairs, underscoring the city’s focus on maintaining its roadways without tapping into other budget resources. Similarly, in Seattle’s Proposition 1 proposes a property tax dedicated to funding critical transportation projects, including road and bridge repairs and public transit improvements.

Hillsborough County’s Referendum 1 in Florida aims to renew a half-cent sales tax for community investments, including transportation projects. This measure continues a funding stream that has supported local infrastructure, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety across the county’s growing road network. Meanwhile, Nashville, Tennessee, is putting forward a referendum on its Transit Improvement Program to secure funding for its expanding public transit system and improving safety.

These ballot measures underscore the emphasis local governments and communities place on improving transportation infrastructure. As populations and transportation demands grow, voters hold the power to shape the future of their communities’ roads and transit systems.
