The AGC Education and Research Foundation is committed to the growth, development, and encouragement of field research initiatives to enhance the education of construction management students. In support of this vision, the AGC Foundation commissions case studies that will provide today’s construction management students the tools to build the industry’s future. Cases written by faculty-contractor teams are based on actual experience and provide students with the opportunity to work through issues in a classroom setting.
The latest case study, written in partnership with the Florida Gulf Coast University, introduces learners to the target value design (TVD) process as implemented on the design and construction of a large medical complex in Florida.
When TVD is used, project costs are considered a constraint, and the objective is to design and construct a project that provides the most value to the owner for the target price. The general contractor and major subcontractors are selected early in the design process to collaborate with the principal stakeholders when planning and designing the project. This case study contains two dilemmas regarding cost & scope management issues that learners are asked to address. They must consider the facts and circumstances described and recommend solutions for the issues presented.
